INBOX FULL by Molly Soda is an eight hour long endurance performance and video piece in which the artist reads aloud unread messages from strangers in her Tumblr inbox. The notes are filled with compliments, insults, and genuine curiosity, ranging from “I love you and I think you’re the queen of everything.” to “Can you suggest names for my little green snake?” The artist reads the messages with a straight face, performing her online celebrity as a mirror that reflects Internet culture.
Molly Soda has been called a “Tumblr it-girl” by Vice Motherboard, and told the publication, “A friend told me about Tumblr, it seemed cool. It’s like a neat little package for the contents of your brain/daily life/art work that doesn’t read so much like a diary.”
A profile of Molly in PAPER Mag states that the 23-year-old artist hosts a popular monthly Chicago dance party called “Cult” with whiz-kid DJ Teen Witch, occasionally dances backup for cosmic-goth musician Grimes, moonlights as a graphic designer (her GIFs were used to 2012’s MTV Video Music Awards) and she writes, directs and stars (as every single character) in the online mini-seriesTween Dreams.
This fall she’ll be hitting the road with Extreme Animals' Internet Tour (formerly known as Realm Recognize Realm) in which a team of Internet artists will create “physical-world performance spaces that are closer to the experience of tumblr than to the experience of the club — social gatherings that embrace all of the awkwardness, banality, and domesticity of the Tumblr or Web 2.0 cam performance but IRL.”
